Spark Starters Program Overview

Spark Starters is the introductory level of our programming curriculum at Love to Code Academy, specifically crafted for young learners with little to no previous coding experience. This Level A program is designed to ignite a passion for technology and coding through interactive, fun, and engaging activities that lay the foundational skills needed for future success in coding and beyond.

Curriculum Goals

In Spark Starters, students will embark on a learning adventure that introduces them to the basics of coding and computational thinking:

Understanding Computers and Coding

Students start by learning what computers are and how they work, exploring the basic components and functions of computers.

Introduction to Code.org

Using the user-friendly Code.org platform, students will engage with simple drag-and-drop coding exercises, learning to navigate and use the interface effectively.

Creating Basic Sequences and Algorithms

Students will learn to create and understand simple sequences in coding, beginning to recognize patterns and the importance of order in programming.

Events and Commands

Through interactive games and activities, students will be introduced to basic programming concepts like events and commands, understanding how to make things happen in a digital environment.

Interactive Storytelling and Game Play

Students will use their new skills to create simple interactive stories or games, applying their knowledge in a context that is engaging and creatively fulfilling.

Introduction to Problem Solving

Even at this early stage, problem-solving is emphasized, with activities designed to help students think critically and logically to overcome simple challenges.

The Spark Starters program not only focuses on technical skills but also integrates Love to Code Academy's Champion of Character traits. We strive to develop qualities such as teamwork, persistence, and integrity from the very beginning of a student's coding journey:

Challenges tailored to young learners help instill persistence as they learn that overcoming obstacles is part of learning to code.
